Top Tips For August
Another great summer month to enjoy your garden
It's amazing how quickly the year flies by, the summer already feels as if it's over, doesn't it?
But rest assured, there's still plenty for you to be doing in the garden, so get out there and enjoy it (whatever the weather!).
Essential things to do in August
-
Remember to water those plants in the evening. It might not be hot, but the ground is still quite dry.
-
Now is a good time to sow daffodils and crocuses ready for Spring 2019.
-
Salad days! If you've been growing runner beans, peas, courgettes and sweetcorn, now's the time to enjoy them.
-
Cut back herbs. At this time of year they can soon outgrow themselves. A quick prune will help them.
-
Sow winter-flowering pansies for a spot of colour when the days are dark!
-
Patio plants. Don't ignore them! Give them a quick feed with fertilizer.
-
Love your roses? Then stop feeding them as it will encourage late growth that will be prone to winter disease.
-
And if you love your cabbage then keep an eye out for for cabbage white butterfly eggs on your cabbage plants. Easier to squish than caterpillars!
-
Slugs and smails love this time of year - and your plants. But if you pop a few jam jars with beer in at ground level they die a merry death!
-
Mow the lawn
before you go on holiday.
